10 Years of Genesis: When Innovation Meets Purpose

LONDON & NEW YORK – April 22, 2025 – Genesis celebrates 10 years of financial markets innovation. Below is a message from our CEO, Stephen Murphy.

When Innovation Meets Purpose

Approaching a 10-year anniversary is a moment to reflect on and appreciate the path that brought us here. For Genesis, this is not just a time to celebrate, but also to revisit the genesis of Genesis itself – the challenges we set out to solve, the people who made it possible and the mark we’ve made on how the financial industry approaches building software.

Genesis was founded on a simple, but bold vision: there had to be a faster, more cost effective and less-risky way to build software in financial markets, one that transcended the “buy vs. build” dilemma. We pioneered a new approach we call “buy to build,” empowering institutions to rapidly develop high-performance, compliant solutions with the Genesis Platform.

We created the platform with a component-based microservices architecture, reflecting the design patterns we developed throughout our careers. These patterns were shaped by our experience in equity trading, where performance, low latency, scalability and compliance are critical. That’s why applications built on Genesis aren’t just “enterprise-grade,” they meet a higher standard we call “financial markets-grade.”

Back then, we called ourselves low-code, but we were never like generic BPM, RPA and other low/no-code tools. While these have their place, they are not financial markets-grade and too often they hinder innovation when applied to complex, business-critical financial use cases. That’s why, today, we don’t call the platform low-code.

Our vision and unique technology resonated quickly with clients and investors, proving what’s possible when innovation meets purpose in the financial industry.

Top venture capital firms (Insight Partners, Accel, Google Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Tiger Global, Illuminate Financial and Tribeca Early Stage Partners) focused on financial technology were quick to invest in Genesis, as were Bank of America, BNY and Citi, which are also clients.

Other clients include sell-side and buy-side firms, as well as market infrastructure providers like clearinghouses and trading venues. While most use Genesis to build proprietary solutions, some of our most extensive work supports industry-wide services, notably Octaura and Neptune, which benefit hundreds of firms.

Partnering with clients to deploy innovative new applications, enhance legacy systems, reduce vendor risk and costs, replace Excel-based processes and maximize developer productivity is inspiring for me and the rest of Team Genesis. We use the Genesis Marketplace to extend the value of most of our work to anyone in the industry. Our innovative primary bond market application, middle-office suite, credit insurance tool and wealth management suite are examples of ready-to-go solutions available to anyone who builds on the platform.

Looking back, I’m proud that we’ve shown that it’s possible to transform how financial institutions develop, deploy and maintain software. As we look forward, I know things are only getting more exciting.

AI brings enormous potential to transform the industry even further. Our response isn’t to bolt AI onto our platform, because simply adding AI to existing technologies is, by definition, limiting. We also know that generating uncontrolled code at machine speed is not the future.

Financial firms need a way to capitalize on the promise of AI without compromising the compliance, predictability and performance of their software. Here, again, Genesis is different in that we provide “AI on guardrails” to financial markets. The powerful component-based architecture in the platform makes it an ideal foundation for AI. The platform shifts the role of the AI model from generating raw code to assembling and configuring the components required by sophisticated financial use cases. These guardrails ensure that AI delivers clean, predictable and maintainable applications.

With the principle of AI on guardrails in mind, we are working with AI holistically, making it core to the platform, from the ground up, to give developers and even non-developers the next generation of tools to produce the financial markets-grade solutions they need.

I’m incredibly excited about the next 10 years and how our clients, our partners, our investors and AI will come together to advance our platform and the future of the software development lifecycle.

To everyone who has played a role in our success so far, thank you. Here’s to the next ten years of Genesis!
